Coenzyme Q10 in Skincare - The Science of Cellular Energy and Anti-Ageing

Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone or simply CoQ10, is a naturally occurring compound found in every cell of the human body. Its name derives from the Latin ubique, meaning everywhere - and for good reason. What Is Coenzyme Q10?

Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like compound that sits within the mitochondria - the energy-producing organelles inside every cell. Its primary role is as an electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, the process by which cells convert nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP) - the universal energy currency of biological systems.

In simpler terms, CoQ10 is the spark plug of cellular energy production. Without adequate levels, cells cannot generate the energy required for DNA repair, protein synthesis, collagen production, or antioxidant defence. When CoQ10 levels decline, cellular function deteriorates - and in the skin, this manifests as wrinkles, sagging, dullness, and increased vulnerability to environmental damage.

Beyond its role in energy production, CoQ10 is also a potent lipid-soluble antioxidant. It directly neutralises free radicals within cell membranes, protecting the lipid bilayer from oxidative damage. Why Does Skin Lose CoQ10 with Age?

By age 40, skin CoQ10 levels are approximately 30 percent lower than in young adult skin. By age 80, they may be reduced by as much as 65 percent.

This decline occurs for two reasons. First, the body's endogenous production of CoQ10 naturally decreases with age - the biosynthetic pathway becomes less efficient over time. Second, cumulative exposure to UV radiation, pollution, and oxidative stress consumes existing CoQ10 reserves faster than they can be replenished. The skin, as the body's outermost organ, bears the greatest burden of environmental oxidative stress and therefore depletes its CoQ10 stores most rapidly.

A landmark 2024 review by Lain et al., published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology and cited 29 times, confirmed that this age-related CoQ10 depletion directly correlates with measurable signs of skin ageing - including increased wrinkle depth, reduced skin thickness, decreased elasticity, and impaired wound healing capacity.

Clinical Evidence for Topical CoQ10

The most robust clinical evidence for topical CoQ10 relates to wrinkle reduction. CoQ10 provides measurable protection against UV-induced skin damage. When applied topically before sun exposure, CoQ10 has been shown to reduce the depth of wrinkles caused by UVA radiation and decrease the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) - the enzymes that break down collagen and elastin in response to UV exposure. While CoQ10 is not a replacement for sunscreen, it provides an additional layer of antioxidant defence that complements SPF protection.

As skin cells age and their mitochondria become less efficient, they produce less ATP and generate more damaging reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a byproduct. Retinol works by accelerating cell turnover and stimulating collagen production through retinoic acid receptor activation.
