How to Build the Perfect Anti-Ageing Skincare Routine
Building an effective anti-ageing skincare routine can feel overwhelming. With so many active ingredients—Vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and peptides—it is easy to make mistakes. Layering the wrong ingredients or applying them at the wrong time of day can neutralise their benefits or, worse, cause severe irritation and damage your skin barrier.
However, clinical dermatology offers a clear, evidence-based framework for routine construction. A 2024 clinical study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal demonstrated that a 'stackable' routine—applying specific active ingredients in a precise order—yields significant improvements in hydration, texture, and pigmentation with zero adverse reactions. This guide translates that clinical framework into a practical, step-by-step routine.
The Core Principle: Protect in the AM, Repair in the PM
The most fundamental rule of skincare is aligning your routine with your skin's circadian rhythm. During the day, your skin is under attack from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, pollution, and oxidative stress. At night, your skin enters a restorative phase, where cell turnover peaks and blood flow increases.
Therefore, your morning routine should focus entirely on protection and antioxidant defence, while your evening routine should focus on cellular repair, collagen stimulation, and deep hydration.
The Perfect Morning Routine (AM)
The goal of the morning routine is to neutralise free radicals before they can degrade your collagen and to protect against photoageing.
Step 1: Gentle Cleanse
Overnight, your skin produces sebum and sheds dead cells. A gentle morning cleanse removes this buildup, creating a clean canvas for your active ingredients to penetrate. Avoid harsh, stripping cleansers that compromise your lipid barrier.
Step 2: Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C is the cornerstone of the morning routine. It is a potent antioxidant that neutralises the free radicals generated by UV exposure. Furthermore, clinical evidence shows that applying Vitamin C underneath sunscreen actually boosts the photoprotective efficacy of the SPF.
Step 3: Moisturiser with Niacinamide
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is excellent for the morning because it strengthens the skin barrier and regulates sebum production throughout the day. It pairs perfectly with Vitamin C (the old myth that they cancel each other out has been thoroughly debunked by modern cosmetic chemistry).
Step 4: Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
This is non-negotiable. Up to 80% of visible facial ageing is caused by UV radiation. If you are not wearing SPF, every other anti-ageing product you apply is completely wasted. SPF must always be the final step in your morning routine.
The Perfect Evening Routine (PM)
The evening routine is where you deploy your most powerful restorative ingredients. Because there is no UV radiation to degrade the active compounds, this is the time for collagen-stimulating treatments.
Step 1: Double Cleanse
You must remove sunscreen, makeup, and daily pollution. An oil-based cleanser followed by a gentle water-based cleanser ensures the skin is perfectly clean without stripping it of its natural oils.
Step 2: Retinoids or Bakuchiol
Retinol is the gold standard for stimulating collagen synthesis, but it is notoriously irritating and increases photosensitivity (which is why it must only be used at night). For those with sensitive skin, Bakuchiol is a clinically proven, plant-based alternative that provides similar collagen-boosting benefits without the irritation or redness.
Step 3: Hyaluronic Acid and Peptides
Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) peaks overnight, meaning your skin loses more moisture while you sleep. Hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin, while peptides act as messengers that signal your fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin.
Step 4: Rich Moisturiser or Facial Oil
The final step is to 'seal' the active ingredients into the skin using an occlusive moisturiser or a botanical oil rich in essential fatty acids, such as Rosehip Oil. This prevents moisture from escaping and supports overnight barrier repair.

The Golden Rule of Layering: Thinnest to Thickest
Regardless of the specific products you use, always apply them in order of consistency: from the thinnest, most water-like textures (toners and serums) to the thickest, most lipid-rich textures (creams and oils). Applying an oil before a water-based serum will block the serum from penetrating the skin.
The Mayka Anti-Ageing Protocol
We formulate our products to fit seamlessly into this evidence-based framework:
AM Routine: Cleanse, then apply the Vitamin C Collagen Boost Moisturiser (which combines your Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and hydration steps into one), followed by your preferred SPF.
PM Routine: Cleanse, apply the Anti-Wrinkle Face Serum (rich in peptides and botanical extracts), target the delicate eye area with Magic Eyes Cream, and seal everything in with 100% Organic Rosehip Oil.
Consistency is the true secret to anti-ageing. A simple, scientifically sound routine performed every day will always outperform a complex, chaotic routine performed inconsistently.
