Making the switch to natural skincare is one of the best decisions you can make for your skin and for the planet. But if you have spent years using conventional products packed with synthetic ingredients, the transition can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? What do you replace first? Will your skin react? This guide walks you through the process step by step, so you can make the switch confidently and without wasting money on products that do not suit you.
Why Switch to Natural Skincare?
The average person applies between 9 and 15 personal care products to their skin every day. Each product contains multiple ingredients, many of which are synthetic chemicals that can accumulate in the body over time. Studies have detected parabens, phthalates, and synthetic musks in human blood, urine, and breast tissue. While the long-term health implications are still being researched, many people choose to reduce their exposure as a precaution.
Beyond personal health, conventional skincare has a significant environmental footprint. Synthetic chemicals wash off your skin and into the water supply, where they can disrupt aquatic ecosystems. Microplastics from exfoliating beads and synthetic polymers persist in the ocean for hundreds of years. Natural skincare, particularly from small-batch producers like Mayka Skincare, uses biodegradable ingredients and minimal, plastic-free packaging.
And then there is the skin itself. Many people find that once they remove the harsh sulphates, synthetic fragrances, and alcohol from their routine, their skin actually settles and improves. The constant cycle of stripping and over-moisturising that conventional products create can mask the skin's natural ability to regulate itself.
What to Expect During the Transition
The Purging Phase
Some people experience a brief purging phase in the first one to three weeks after switching to natural skincare. This happens because natural cleansers remove the residue of synthetic products that has built up in the pores over months or years. Skin may temporarily look worse before it looks better - small breakouts, mild dryness, or slight oiliness are all normal.
This is not an allergic reaction and it is not a sign that natural skincare does not work. It is simply your skin recalibrating. Most people find that after two to four weeks, their skin settles into a noticeably better baseline.
The Adjustment Period
Your skin's oil production has likely been regulated by the synthetic ingredients in your previous products. Once you remove those, it may take a few weeks for your skin to find its natural balance. If you have oily skin, you may find it gets slightly oilier at first before settling down. If you have dry skin, you may need a slightly richer moisturiser during the transition.
How to Transition: The Step-by-Step Approach
The most common mistake people make when switching to natural skincare is doing everything at once. Replacing your entire routine in one go makes it impossible to identify which product is causing a reaction if something goes wrong. The smarter approach is to replace one product at a time, starting with the products that stay on your skin the longest.
Step 1 - Replace Your Moisturiser First
Your moisturiser is on your skin all day and all night. It is the product with the most prolonged contact, so it has the greatest potential impact - both positive and negative. Start here. Choose a natural moisturiser that suits your skin type and use it for two to three weeks before making any other changes.
For dry or sensitive skin, look for a moisturiser rich in shea butter, rosehip oil, and vitamin E. For oily or combination skin, a lighter formulation with jojoba oil or aloe vera is ideal. For rosacea or reactive skin, choose a fragrance-free option with niacinamide and ceramides.
Step 2 - Replace Your Cleanser
Once your skin has adjusted to the new moisturiser, switch your cleanser. This is the second most impactful change you can make. Replace your foaming, sulphate-based cleanser with a gentle cream cleanser, oil cleanser, or natural soap bar. Our African Black Soap is an excellent all-rounder for most skin types - it cleanses thoroughly without stripping the skin barrier.
Step 3 - Replace Your Eye Cream
The skin around the eyes is the thinnest and most delicate on the face. Synthetic ingredients in conventional eye creams can cause sensitivity and puffiness over time. Switch to a natural eye cream that uses plant-based actives such as caffeine (to reduce puffiness), vitamin K (for dark circles), and hyaluronic acid (for plumping). Our Magic Eyes Eye Cream is specifically formulated for this delicate area.
Step 4 - Replace Your Body Care
Body lotions, shower gels, and soaps are often the most heavily fragranced products in a conventional routine. Replace your shower gel with a natural soap bar and your body lotion with a shea butter-based cream or body oil. These changes are lower risk than face products because the skin on the body is thicker and less reactive.
Step 5 - Replace Your SPF Last
Sunscreen is the most complex product to replace naturally because mineral SPFs (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) can feel heavier than chemical SPFs. Leave this until last, when your skin is fully adjusted to natural products. When you do switch, choose a mineral SPF that has been formulated to blend well - many modern mineral sunscreens are lightweight and leave no white cast.
How to Read a Natural Skincare Label
Not everything labelled as 'natural' or 'organic' is genuinely so. The beauty industry is largely unregulated when it comes to these terms, and greenwashing is common. Here is how to tell the difference:
Look for: INCI ingredient lists (the standardised Latin names for ingredients), certifications such as Soil Association Organic or COSMOS Natural, and brands that list every ingredient on their website.
Be cautious of: products that use the word 'natural' on the front but list synthetic preservatives, PEGs, silicones, or mineral oil in the INCI list. Also be wary of very long ingredient lists - genuinely natural products tend to have shorter, more recognisable ingredient lists.
At Mayka Skincare, every ingredient in every product is listed on the product page. We use the full INCI name so you can research any ingredient independently. We believe transparency is the foundation of trust.
Building Your Natural Skincare Starter Kit
If you are starting from scratch, here is a simple, effective natural skincare routine that works for most skin types:
Morning: Gentle natural cleanser - alcohol-free toner (optional) - natural moisturiser - mineral SPF 30+
Evening: Natural cleanser or oil cleanser - natural moisturiser - natural eye cream
That is it. Four to five products, all natural, all working together. You do not need a 10-step routine to have great skin. You need the right products, consistently applied.
