African Black Soap has been used for centuries across West Africa - in Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal - as a multi-purpose cleanser for the face, body, and hair. In recent years it has gained a devoted following in the UK and beyond, celebrated for its ability to tackle acne, eczema, hyperpigmentation, and oily skin without the harsh synthetic chemicals found in most commercial cleansers. But what exactly is it, and does it live up to the hype? Let us take a deep dive.

What Is African Black Soap?

Authentic African Black Soap - known as Ose Dudu in Yoruba and Anago Samina in Ghana - is made by sun-drying plantain skins, cocoa pods, palm tree leaves, and shea tree bark, then roasting them to create an ash. This ash is then combined with water and various plant-based fats such as shea butter, coconut oil, and palm kernel oil. The mixture is hand-stirred and left to set, producing a soft, dark brown soap with a distinctive earthy scent.

It is important to note that genuine African Black Soap is not actually black. It ranges in colour from dark brown to golden brown depending on the specific ingredients and the region it comes from. Products that are jet black and perfectly uniform are almost certainly synthetic imitations.

The Key Ingredients and Their Benefits

Plantain Skin Ash

Rich in vitamins A and E, plantain skin ash is a powerful antioxidant that helps to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It also contains iron, which contributes to the soap's characteristic dark colour and helps to even skin tone over time.

Cocoa Pod Ash

Cocoa pod ash contains natural saponins - the compounds responsible for the gentle lather - along with antioxidants that protect the skin from environmental damage. It is also a natural source of potassium, which helps to balance the skin's moisture levels.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is one of the most effective natural moisturisers available. Rich in fatty acids (oleic, stearic, and linoleic acid) and vitamins A and E, it deeply nourishes the skin while forming a protective barrier that locks in moisture. This is what makes African Black Soap cleansing without being stripping - the shea butter replenishes what the cleansing action removes.

Palm Kernel Oil

Palm kernel oil is rich in lauric acid, which has well-documented antimicrobial and antifungal properties. This makes it particularly effective for skin conditions involving bacterial or fungal imbalances, such as acne and certain forms of eczema.

The Benefits of African Black Soap for Your Skin

1. Acne and Blemish Control

African Black Soap is one of the most effective natural remedies for acne-prone skin. The combination of antimicrobial plant ash, lauric acid from palm kernel oil, and the gentle exfoliating action of natural saponins helps to unclog pores, reduce excess sebum, and kill acne-causing bacteria without the drying, irritating effects of synthetic acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

2. Eczema and Psoriasis Relief

The anti-inflammatory properties of shea butter and the soothing effect of vitamin E make African Black Soap a popular choice for those managing eczema and psoriasis. Unlike sulphate-based cleansers that strip the skin barrier, African Black Soap cleanses gently while supporting the skin's natural moisture retention. Many of our customers with eczema report significant improvement in skin comfort after switching to our African Black Soap.

3. Fading Hyperpigmentation and Dark Spots

The vitamin A content in plantain skin ash acts as a natural retinoid, gently accelerating cell turnover to fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (the dark marks left after spots heal), sun spots, and uneven skin tone. This makes it an excellent long-term treatment for a more even complexion.

4. Deep Cleansing Without Stripping

One of the most common complaints about conventional cleansers is that they leave the skin feeling tight and dry. African Black Soap achieves a thorough cleanse - removing make-up, excess oil, and environmental pollutants - while the shea butter and plant oils ensure the skin's natural moisture barrier remains intact.

5. Suitable for All Skin Types

African Black Soap is one of the rare cleansers that genuinely works for all skin types. For oily and acne-prone skin, it controls sebum and clears pores. For dry and sensitive skin, the shea butter and plant oils provide nourishment. For combination skin, it balances without over-drying the dry areas or under-cleansing the oily zones.

How to Use African Black Soap

African Black Soap is more concentrated than commercial soap, so a little goes a long way. Here is how to get the best results:

1. Wet your face or body with warm water. Warm water opens the pores and allows the soap to cleanse more effectively.

2. Work a small amount of soap between your palms to create a lather. Do not apply the bar directly to your face, as the concentrated soap can cause temporary tingling or irritation on sensitive skin.

3. Apply the lather to your skin using gentle circular motions. Leave it on for 30 to 60 seconds to allow the active compounds to work.

4. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. Cool water helps to close the pores after cleansing.

5. Follow with a light moisturiser. Even though African Black Soap contains shea butter, applying a moisturiser afterwards helps to seal in hydration, especially if you have dry skin.

A Note on the Initial Adjustment Period

Some people experience a brief adjustment period of one to two weeks when they first start using African Black Soap, particularly if they have been using heavily synthetic products. During this time, the skin may purge - bringing underlying congestion to the surface. This is a normal and temporary process. If you experience significant irritation beyond mild tingling, reduce usage to every other day until your skin adjusts.
